Famous Landmarks in Norway: 13 Sites Worth Seeing

This is the classic Norway first trip: the capital, the western fjord city, and the fjord country in between, stitched together by one of Europe's great scenic railways. Oslo opens with waterfront architecture and museums, Bergen adds a Hanseatic harbor ringed by mountains, and the Flåm valley drops you into the narrow arms of the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. See the full itinerary.

Oslo

Oslo has reshaped its waterfront into a walkable run of contemporary landmarks, from the sloping-roof opera house to new museums along the harbor, while keeping green space and fjord views close to the center. Two days covers the modern waterfront, the museum peninsula of Bygdøy and the sculpture park without feeling stretched.

Bergen is the gateway to the western fjords and a handsome city in its own right, its old Hanseatic wharf of leaning wooden houses set against seven hills and a working fish market on the harbor. Flåm / Aurlandsfjord-Nærøyfjord

Flåm is a tiny village at the head of the Aurlandsfjord where a steep branch railway drops down from the mountains, making it the natural base for the fjord finale. From here the water narrows into the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO-listed arm barely wide enough for a boat, and roads climb to viewpoints over the whole system. Two days covers the scenic railway, a fjord cruise and a high viewpoint at a relaxed pace.
