Best time to goNovember for maple season is the single best week in Japan. Late March for blossoms is a close second, and crowded.
Getting aroundBuses reach the temples but crawl; mix in trains and taxis. Rent a bike for the flat city center.

8:00 AM

11:00 AM
Sannenzaka lanes

Photogenic only before 9 AM; pair with Tenryu-ji’s garden next door.
11:30 AM

A short climb; monkeys roam free with the city view behind.
3:00 PM
Kinkaku-ji Golden Pavilion
Gold leaf over a mirror pond; the loop takes 40 minutes.
Day 3: Fushimi and downtown
7:30 AM
Fushimi Inari torii gates

12:30 PM
Nishiki Market lunch
Kyoto’s kitchen: tofu doughnuts, skewers, and pickles to sample.
5:00 PM
