Osaka is Japan's kitchen and its most easygoing big city, built for walking, eating, and river-crossing between two hubs: Kita (Umeda) in the north and Minami (Namba) in the south. Three days is enough to cover the castle, the neon canals, and the older temple districts without rushing.

Best time to goLate March to early April for cherry blossoms, or October and November for cool, dry days and autumn color. Avoid the humid peak of July and August, and note that mid-August (Obon) is a busy domestic travel week.
Getting aroundGet an ICOCA card and use the Osaka Metro, which reaches almost everything. The Midosuji Line links Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Tennoji in a straight north-south run. Central districts are very walkable.
Local tip: Osaka eats late and rewards standing counters. Come to Kuromon Ichiba and Dotonbori hungry rather than reserving, and carry cash for the small takoyaki and kushikatsu stalls that do not take cards.
