A capital of 130,000 built on and into a sandstone promontory above two river gorges, fortified so heavily over four centuries that it was called the Gibraltar of the North. The fortress was largely dismantled by treaty in 1867, but the tunnels through the rock remain, and the city grew into the gaps. It is now a banking and EU centre with a medieval skeleton.
The country's oldest town, founded around a Benedictine abbey in 698, sitting at the edge of a sandstone landscape of narrow gorges, mossy boulders, and waterfalls that Luxembourg markets as Little Switzerland. The comparison is generous but the walking is genuinely excellent.
