Athens is where the experiment of Western civic life began, and its downtown is effectively an open-air site: you drink coffee at eye level with 2,500-year-old marble. The city around it: noisy, graffitied, generous, is in the middle of a genuine food-and-culture moment.

Acropolis and Parthenon
The Parthenon has crowned this rock since 447 BC. Entry is by timed slot with a 20,000-a-day cap. Take the first morning window and walk up before the marble starts to shimmer with heat.

Ancient Agora
Where Socrates argued and citizens voted. The Temple of Hephaestus here is the best-preserved Doric temple in Greece, and the rebuilt Stoa of Attalos shows what the ruins looked like new.

Panathenaic Stadium
The only stadium on earth built entirely of marble, rebuilt on ancient foundations for the first modern Olympics in 1896. You are allowed to run the track.

Temple of Olympian Zeus
Seven centuries in the building, finished by Hadrian in 132 AD; its surviving columns are the tallest in Athens, a short walk from Hadrian’s Arch.

Around 1600 BC one of history’s largest eruptions blew this island into a ring; its villages now balance on the caldera’s 300-meter rim above a flooded crater. The early-2025 earthquake swarm settled by that spring, and the island has run normally since.

Fira and the caldera rim
The cliff-edge capital, 260 meters above the flooded crater, cable car or 587 zigzag steps down to the old port, and the best orientation walk on the island.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site
A Bronze Age town buried and preserved by the great eruption, three-story houses, drainage, and staircases intact under a protective roof. The Aegean’s Pompeii, 1,700 years older.

A Hellenistic and Roman city on the 369-meter Mesa Vouno ridge: agora, theatre, and temples with a sheer drop to the beaches on either side.
