Sweden Itinerary: 5 Days in Stockholm, Gothenburg

Two cities carry most first trips to Sweden: Stockholm, spread across fourteen islands where medieval lanes meet clean Nordic design, and Gothenburg, an easygoing west-coast port with canals, cafe culture and a rocky archipelago on its doorstep. A single fast train ties them together, which makes a compact five days feel unhurried.

Sweden had 7 million international arrivals (2019, World Bank / UNWTO international tourist arrivals series; Sweden also reports inbound tourism as commercial guest nights, so counts vary by methodology). Last reviewed 2026-08-21.

Local tip: Both cities reward a transit card and slow walking over ticking off sights. In Stockholm the water itself is the attraction, so leave room for at least one boat trip.

Stockholm is built on the seam between lake and sea, its old town preserved almost whole on a single island while newer districts spread across the surrounding water.
