New Zealand Itinerary: 7 Days in Auckland, Rotorua, Queenstown
A week is enough to trace New Zealand from its biggest harbour city down to its alpine south. This route pairs Auckland, where a third of the country lives around two harbours, with the geothermal heart of the North Island at Rotorua, then flies to Queenstown for lake-and-mountain country. It leans on one long scenic drive and one domestic flight, so most of the week is spent in places rather than in transit.
New Zealand had 3.2 million international arrivals (2024, Stats NZ international visitor arrivals (year ended March 2024)). Last reviewed 2026-08-21.

Best time to goLate spring to early autumn (November to April) brings the longest days and the most settled weather. Queenstown is busy and cold in July and August ski season; Rotorua and Auckland stay mild year round but wetter in winter.

Local tip: Book the Rotorua-to-Queenstown domestic flight early: it almost always routes through Auckland or Christchurch, so treat it as a connecting hop and leave buffer rather than a same-day tight window.
Auckland, 2 days
Built across a narrow isthmus between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, Auckland is a city of extinct volcanic cones, ferries and reclaimed waterfront. Māori history sits alongside a Pacific-facing modern downtown, and the cones and gulf islands mean nature is never far from the centre. Two days covers the volcanic viewpoints, the museum on the hill and a ferry out into the Hauraki Gulf.

Rotorua, 2 days
Getting here: Drive, Auckland to Rotorua on SH1 and SH5 through the Waikato
Rotorua sits on an active geothermal field, so steam drifts up between streets and the air carries sulphur. It is also a centre of Te Arawa Māori culture, with a lakeside village and living traditions of carving, hangi and performance. Two days is enough for a geothermal park, a cultural evening and time among the towering redwoods.

It is the base for bungy, jet-boats and alpine walks, and the gateway to the fjords of the southwest. Three days allows the town and gondola, a historic goldfields side trip and a full-day journey out to Milford Sound.
