Best time to goApril to June and September to October for warm, walkable days. July and August are hot and packed; winter is mild but wetter. Pompeii has almost no shade, so an earlier or later season spares you the midday sun.
Getting aroundThe historic center is a walking city, though the streets are chaotic and pickpockets work the crowds, so stay aware. The Metro and funiculars climb to Vomero, and the Circumvesuviana train runs to Pompeii. Validate regional train tickets before boarding.
Local tip: Eat pizza where the line is longest and cash is king; the classic Margherita and marinara are the city’s birthright. For Pompeii, go early, bring water and a hat, and wear sturdy shoes for the ancient stone streets.
