Best time to goMay to September for beer-garden weather and long days. Late September into early October brings Oktoberfest, when the city fills and rooms get scarce and pricey. December adds Christmas markets and a festive Altstadt.
Getting aroundThe U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, and buses share one ticket and cover the whole city; a day pass is the easy choice. The Altstadt is flat and walkable, and cycling is popular with dedicated lanes everywhere. Watch for bike lanes when crossing on foot.
Local tip: Beer gardens under chestnut trees often let you bring your own food if you buy their drinks, a long-standing Bavarian custom. Arrive at Marienplatz before 11am or 5pm to catch the glockenspiel show on the town hall.
