Bruges is a preserved medieval city of canals, gabled squares, and belfries, small enough to cross on foot in half an hour. Two unhurried days is the right length to see its core and still linger over waffles and beer.

Best time to goApril to June and September to October give mild weather and lighter crowds. December brings a Christmas market to the Markt. July and August are the busiest months.
Getting aroundThe historic centre is entirely walkable and largely cobbled, so pack flat shoes. Canal boats offer a lovely change of angle, and the train station sits a short walk south of the centre.
Local tip: Day-trippers pour in mid-morning and leave by late afternoon. Stay overnight and walk the squares early or after dark to have the canals and lamplit lanes almost to yourself.
