How many days do you need in Türkiye?

Seven days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Türkiye, across Istanbul and Cappadocia.

Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.

Türkiye · 7 days Istanbul → Cappadocia
Best time: April–May and September–October: mild in Istanbul, crisp mornings and reliable balloon weather in Cappadocia.
Istanbul: Hagia SophiaDay 1
🏛️9:00 AM
Hagia Sophia
The sixth-century dome that redefined architecture: cathedral, mosque, museum, and mosque again. Tourists now enter separately for the upper gallery (paid, since 2024); restoration scaffolding stands inside, but the gallery mosaics and dome views remain open.
🚶 ~6 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Istanbul Archaeology Museums
The empire’s attic beside Topkapi, the Alexander Sarcophagus alone is worth the visit, carved so finely the marble reads as skin.
🚶 ~13 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.5 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Sultanahmet
The old imperial peninsula: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Hippodrome square within a five-minute walk of each other. Stay nearby once in your life for the dawn call to prayer echoing between them.
Istanbul: Blue MosqueDay 2
🏛️9:00 AM
Blue Mosque
Six minarets and twenty thousand handmade İznik tiles glowing blue in the filtered light. Free to enter outside prayer times; the courtyard at dusk, floodlit, is the postcard.
🚶 ~16 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.6 mi
🥾1:30 PM
Gülhane Park
The old outer garden of Topkapi Palace, rolling down to the water, plane trees, tulips in April, and a terrace tea garden overlooking the Bosphorus shipping lanes.
🚶 ~17 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.6 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Bosphorus sunset cruise
Up the strait between two continents past Ottoman palaces, wooden waterfront mansions, and the fortress of Rumeli Hisarı, the city only fully makes sense from the water.
Istanbul: Topkapi PalaceDay 3
🏛️9:00 AM
Topkapi Palace
Four hundred years of Ottoman rule ran from these courtyards on the point above the Bosphorus, the Harem’s tiled apartments and the treasury’s emeralds justify the ticket. Closed Tuesdays.
🚶 ~10 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.4 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Basilica Cistern
A sixth-century underground forest of 336 columns that once watered the Byzantine palace: dim, dripping, and cool at midday, with two ancient Medusa heads propping the back corner.
🚶 ~32 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.2 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Karaköy and Galata
The old European trading quarter climbing from the waterfront to the Galata Tower, steep lanes of coffee roasters, design shops, and rooftop views over the Golden Horn.
Istanbul: Grand Bazaar and Spice BazaarDay 4
🏛️9:00 AM
Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar
Four thousand shops under painted vaults since 1461, and the smaller, headier spice hall down the hill by the ferries. Haggling is expected, tea is part of the deal, and getting lost is the point.
🚗 ~12 min · 3.4 mi
🥾1:30 PM
Pierre Loti Hill
A cable-car ride above the Golden Horn to a hilltop tea terrace beside an Ottoman cemetery, the whole horn curving to the old city in one view.
🚗 ~23 min · 6.4 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Street-food walk
An evening graze across Kadıköy or the old city with someone who knows the difference between the tourist döner and the real thing, fish sandwiches, midye dolma, künefe, and a rakı education.
Arrive in CappadociaDay 5
✈️8:30 AM
Flight to Cappadocia
Istanbul to Cappadocia in about 1h20, fly into Kayseri or Nevşehir from either Istanbul airport, then an hour’s shuttle transfer to Göreme. Book the shuttle with your hotel ahead.
✈️ ~1h20 · 351 mi
🏛️2:00 PM
Uçhisar Castle
The tallest fairy chimney of them all, a fortress-honeycomb of tunnels climbing to a summit that surveys every valley in Cappadocia. Sixty meters of stairs, ten minutes, unbeatable payoff.
🚶 ~43 min · 🚗 ~6 min · 1.6 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Göreme
The village at the center of the valleys, half its hotels carved into the rock. Every trailhead, sunset point, and balloon launch field is minutes away, and the chimneys glow from the town’s viewpoints at dusk.
Cappadocia: Derinkuyu underground cityDay 6
🏛️9:00 AM
Derinkuyu underground city
An eighteen-story refuge carved 85 meters straight down: stables, chapels, wineries, and rolling stone doors that sealed thousands of people safely underground. Not one for the claustrophobic.
🚗 ~68 min · 20 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Göreme Open-Air Museum
A UNESCO-listed monastic complex of rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes still vivid after a thousand years, the Dark Church, kept dim to preserve its colors, is the masterpiece and worth its separate ticket.
🚶 ~17 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.6 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Sunset horseback or ATV valley tour
Cappadocia means “land of beautiful horses,” and an evening ride through Rose Valley as the rock turns red is the fitting way to see it, ATVs run the same routes for the saddle-averse.
Cappadocia: Paşabağ (Monks Valley)Day 7
🏛️9:00 AM
Paşabağ (Monks Valley)
The most sculptural chimneys in the region, triple-capped cones that hermit monks hollowed into cells, including a chapel dedicated to St. Simeon reached by ladder-worn steps.
🚗 ~10 min · 2.8 mi
🥾1:30 PM
Pigeon Valley
A gentle four-kilometer walk between Uçhisar and Göreme beneath cliffs riddled with centuries-old carved dovecotes, the pigeons fertilized the vineyards that made the valley rich.
🚶 ~21 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 0.8 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Uçhisar
The quieter, higher village stacked around the castle rock, stone lanes, pigeon-house cliffs, and the best long views across the whole valley system toward Mount Erciyes.
