How many days do you need in Switzerland?
Seven days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Switzerland, across Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region.
Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.
Switzerland · 7 days Zurich → Lucerne → Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region
Best time: June to September for open mountain railways, wildflowers, and every hiking pass clear of snow.
Zurich: GrossmünsterDay 1
🏛️9:00 AMGrossmünster
The twin-towered Romanesque church where Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation in 1519. Climb the Karlsturm for the roofline view over the river and the lake beyond.
🚶 ~6 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🖼️1:30 PMKunsthaus Zürich
The country's deepest art collection, doubled by a 2021 Chipperfield extension, Giacometti, Hodler, and a strong Munch holding outside Norway.
🚶 ~8 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.3 mi
🌆6:00 PMAltstadt and Niederdorf
The medieval old town on both banks of the Limmat, guild houses, narrow lanes, and the pedestrian Niederdorf strip that fills with people the moment the offices empty.
Zurich: FraumünsterDay 2
🏛️9:00 AMFraumünster
The abbey church across the water, famous for five stained-glass windows Chagall made for it at eighty-three. Morning light is when they work.
🚶 ~19 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 0.7 mi
🥾1:30 PMLake Zurich promenade
The shoreline path from Bürkliplatz south, swimming areas, boat piers, and on a clear day the Alps stacked at the far end of the water.
🚶 ~12 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.5 mi
🎟️6:00 PMLake Zurich boat cruise
A short round trip from Bürkliplatz, covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, and the cheapest way to see the city the way it was meant to be approached.
Arrive in LucerneDay 3
🚄8:30 AMTrain to Lucerne
Zurich HB to Lucerne in about 45 minutes on twice-hourly direct InterRegio services, no reservation needed, just walk on. One of the easiest rail hops in Europe.
🚄 ~45m · 25 mi
🏛️2:00 PMChapel Bridge and Water Tower
The oldest surviving wooden covered bridge in Europe, built about 1360, with painted panels under the roof. A 1993 fire destroyed most of the originals; the replacements are honest about what they are.
🚶 ~2 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 424 ft
🌆6:00 PMOld Town
Car-free squares of painted house fronts on the right bank, tight enough that you keep circling back through the same three plazas and not minding.
Lucerne: Musegg WallDay 4
🏛️9:00 AMMusegg Wall
The intact medieval city wall with nine towers, four of them open to climb for free in the warmer months. Almost nobody up there, and the best view of the roofs.
🚶 ~38 min · 🚗 ~5 min · 1.4 mi
🖼️1:30 PMSwiss Museum of Transport
The country's most visited museum, and genuinely good: locomotives, aircraft, a planetarium, and an enormous walkable aerial map of Switzerland. Excellent with kids and fine without.
🚶 ~32 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.2 mi
🎟️6:00 PMLake Lucerne paddle-steamer cruise
Historic steamers running the fjord-like arms of the lake to Vitznau and Flüelen, covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and the loveliest transport in the country.
Arrive in Interlaken and the Jungfrau RegionDay 5
🚄8:30 AMTrain to Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region
Lucerne to Interlaken Ost in about 1h50 on the hourly Luzern–Interlaken Express, over the Brünig Pass beside Lake Lungern and Lake Brienz. Sit on the right leaving Lucerne. It is a scenic route sold as one, but runs on a normal ticket.
🚄 ~1h50 · 42 mi
🏛️2:00 PMJungfraujoch, Top of Europe
The highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m, in a tunnel bored through the Eiger and Mönch between 1896 and 1912. Ice palace, glacier viewing, and the Aletsch, the longest glacier in the Alps, out the window. Expensive and worth it once. Go on a clear morning or not at all.
🚗 ~39 min · 11 mi
🌆6:00 PMInterlaken
The base town between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, not beautiful in itself, but everything departs from here, and the Höhematte meadow in the middle is kept empty on purpose so the Jungfrau stays in view.
Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region: Harder KulmDay 6
🏛️9:00 AMHarder Kulm
Interlaken's own lookout, ten minutes up by funicular, with a platform hanging over the drop and both lakes and the Jungfrau in one view. The cheap version of the big panorama.
🚗 ~32 min · 9.1 mi
🖼️1:30 PMBallenberg Open-Air Museum
A hundred original Swiss farm buildings moved here from every canton and rebuilt, with working craftsmen and old breeds. Near Brienz, and the antidote to a week of looking only upward.
🚗 ~50 min · 14 mi
🎟️6:00 PMGuided Jungfraujoch day
The full railway chain up and back with a guide handling the connections and the timed segments. The independent version is entirely doable; the guided one is for not wanting to think about it.
Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region: Schilthorn and Piz GloriaDay 7
🏛️9:00 AMSchilthorn and Piz Gloria
The revolving summit restaurant from On Her Majesty's Secret Service, above Mürren at 2,970m. The cable car has been under staged replacement since 2024, so check which sections are running before you plan the day.
🚗 ~13 min · 3.7 mi
🥾1:30 PMTrümmelbach Falls
Ten glacial waterfalls carved inside the mountain, reached by a tunnel lift, the meltwater of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau leaving the range at up to 20,000 litres a second. Loud, cold, and unforgettable.
🚶 ~28 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.0 mi
🌆6:00 PMLauterbrunnen valley
A flat-floored glacial trench walled by cliffs with seventy-two waterfalls coming off them. Tolkien walked it in 1911 and drew Rivendell out of it.
