How many days do you need in Indonesia?
Eight days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Indonesia, across Yogyakarta, East and Central Bali, and Lombok and the Gilis.
Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.
Indonesia · 8 days Yogyakarta → East and Central Bali → Lombok and the Gilis
Best time: May to September is the dry season and the safe answer.
Yogyakarta: BorobudurDay 1
🏛️9:00 AMBorobudur
The largest Buddhist monument on earth, built around 800 AD, buried by volcanic ash and rediscovered in 1814. Its 504 Buddhas and two thousand relief panels form a walkable path to enlightenment. Access to the upper terraces is capped and guided since 2023, so book ahead.
🚗 ~53 min · 15 mi
🖼️1:30 PMUllen Sentalu Museum
Javanese court culture, batik, and the private letters of the royal women, in a garden estate on Merapi's slopes. Guided-only, and the best-curated museum on the island.
🚗 ~50 min · 14 mi
🌆6:00 PMMalioboro and the city centre
The main street of stalls, batik, and street food that runs down toward the palace. Busy, cheap, and the fastest way to get a feel for Javanese city life.
Yogyakarta: PrambananDay 2
🏛️9:00 AMPrambanan
A ninth-century Hindu complex of soaring trident-topped towers dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, built as a rival answer to Borobudur. The Ramayana ballet performed here on summer evenings is the good kind of tourist thing.
🚗 ~52 min · 15 mi
🥾1:30 PMMount Merapi
One of the most active volcanoes in the world, looming north of the city. Jeep tours run the lava fields and the villages buried by the 2010 eruption; the summit itself is not a casual climb.
🚗 ~60 min · 17 mi
🎟️6:00 PMSunrise at Borobudur
Entering at first light, when mist sits in the valley and the stupas emerge one by one. Ticketed separately and worth the early alarm.
Yogyakarta: Kraton (Sultan's Palace)Day 3
🏛️9:00 AMKraton (Sultan's Palace)
The still-occupied palace of Yogyakarta's sultan, staffed by court retainers in traditional dress, with gamelan and dance performances most mornings.
🚗 ~85 min · 24 mi
🥾1:30 PMJomblang Cave
A collapsed sinkhole in the karst south of the city where, around midday, a shaft of light drops through the roof into the cavern. You descend by rope harness with a guide.
🚗 ~75 min · 22 mi
🌆6:00 PMKotagede
The old capital of the Mataram sultanate, now the silversmithing quarter, with workshops open to visitors and a royal cemetery among the lanes.
Arrive in East and Central BaliDay 4
✈️8:30 AMFlight to East and Central Bali
Yogyakarta (YIA or JOG) to Denpasar, Bali (DPS) in about 1h40 on frequent low-cost domestic flights. The overland and ferry alternative takes the better part of two days and is only worth it if the journey is the point.
✈️ ~1h40 · 605 mi
🏛️2:00 PMBesakih, the Mother Temple
Bali's holiest and largest temple complex, a rising series of courtyards and split gates on Mount Agung's slope. It survived the 1963 eruption when lava ran either side of it, which Balinese take as no accident.
🚗 ~21 min · 6.1 mi
🌆6:00 PMSidemen valley
Terraced rice country under Mount Agung, with weaving villages and almost no traffic. The quietest good base on the island.
East and Central Bali: Ulun Danu BeratanDay 5
🏛️9:00 AMUlun Danu Beratan
The lake temple that floats on the water at Bedugul when the level is high, dedicated to the goddess of the waters that irrigate the whole island.
🚗 day trip · 27 mi
🖼️1:30 PMBali Museum, Denpasar
Pavilions in traditional palace architecture holding Balinese textiles, masks, and ritual objects. Useful grounding before the temples blur together.
🚗 ~72 min · 21 mi
🎟️6:00 PMSubak and rice-terrace walk
A guided walk through working terraces explaining the water temples and the cooperative system behind them. Turns pretty scenery into something you understand.
East and Central Bali: Tirta GanggaDay 6
🏛️9:00 AMTirta Gangga
A former royal water palace of stepping-stone pools and fountains, rebuilt after Agung's eruption. Small, strange, and lovely late in the day.
🚗 ~65 min · 19 mi
🥾1:30 PMMount Batur sunrise trek
A two-hour pre-dawn climb up an active volcano inside a vast caldera, for sunrise over Lake Batur and Agung beyond. Local rules require a licensed guide; do not try to freelance it.
🚗 ~73 min · 21 mi
🌆6:00 PMMunduk and the central highlands
Cool, misty coffee and clove country in the north, with waterfalls in the ravines and a completely different Bali climate.
Arrive in Lombok and the GilisDay 7
⛴️8:30 AMFast boat to Lombok and the Gilis
Padangbai or Sanur to Gili Trawangan or Bangsal in roughly 1h30 to 2h30 by fast boat, depending on the operator and stops. Seas are roughest in the afternoon, so take a morning departure; a 25-minute DPS to Lombok flight is the all-weather alternative.
⛴️ ~2h · 60 mi
🏛️2:00 PMSade traditional village
A Sasak village of thatched houses and woven-grass granaries, still lived in, where floors are traditionally packed with buffalo dung. Guided visits support the community.
🚗 day trip · 38 mi
🌆6:00 PMGili Trawangan
The largest of the three car-free islands, with a sandy track around the whole rim you can cycle in ninety minutes and turtles in the shallows off the north end.
Lombok and the Gilis: Sasak weaving workshops, SukararaDay 8
🖼️1:30 PMSasak weaving workshops, Sukarara
The village where Lombok's songket weaving is done on backstrap looms, demonstrated and sold direct. A craft stop rather than a museum, and the more honest for it.
🚗 day trip · 26 mi
🎟️6:00 PMGili snorkel boat
A half-day hop between the three islands over turtle grounds and coral. Standard, cheap, and the reason most people come.
