How many days do you need in Hungary?
Six days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Hungary, across Budapest and Eger.
Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.
Hungary · 6 days Budapest → Eger
Best time: May, June, and September for terrace weather and open bath courtyards.
Budapest: Hungarian Parliament BuildingDay 1
🏛️9:00 AMHungarian Parliament Building
The third-largest parliament on earth, finished in 1902 in neo-Gothic with 40kg of gold leaf inside, holding the thousand-year-old Holy Crown. Interior visits are guided and timed, and close when the house is sitting.
🚶 ~24 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 0.9 mi
🖼️1:30 PMHouse of Terror
The building used as headquarters by both the fascist Arrow Cross and then the communist secret police, kept as a museum of both occupations. Heavy, partisan, and essential context for everything else you see.
🚶 ~37 min · 🚗 ~5 min · 1.4 mi
🌆6:00 PMCastle District
The medieval hilltop quarter in Buda: cobbles, the old royal palace, and a terrace view over the whole river bend. Walk up through the garden bazaar rather than queuing for the funicular.
Budapest: Fisherman's BastionDay 2
🏛️9:00 AMFisherman's Bastion
Seven neo-Romanesque turrets on the castle hill, one for each Magyar tribe that arrived in 895. Upper terraces charge in daylight hours; before 9am and after dusk the whole thing is free and empty.
🚶 ~30 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.1 mi
🥾1:30 PMGellért Hill and the Citadella
A 235m limestone bluff over the Danube with the Liberty Statue on top and the best panorama of both banks. Twenty minutes up on foot from the Buda end of Elisabeth Bridge.
🚗 ~10 min · 3.0 mi
🎟️6:00 PMThermal bath afternoon
Széchenyi's neo-Baroque outdoor pools in the city park, or Gellért's Art Nouveau halls, refurbished and reopened in 2025. Chess players in the steam outside are a genuine institution, not a set piece.
Budapest: St. Stephen's BasilicaDay 3
🏛️9:00 AMSt. Stephen's Basilica
Named for Hungary's first king, whose mummified right hand is displayed in a side chapel. The dome walk gives the best rooftop view in Pest.
🚶 ~41 min · 🚗 ~5 min · 1.5 mi
🖼️1:30 PMMuseum of Fine Arts
On Heroes' Square, with a deep Old Masters collection, one of the strongest El Greco holdings outside Spain, reopened in 2018 after a full restoration.
🚶 ~38 min · 🚗 ~5 min · 1.4 mi
🌆6:00 PMDistrict VII, the Jewish Quarter
The former ghetto, now the city's nightlife core, ruin bars built inside abandoned tenements, street food courts, and the largest synagogue in Europe at its edge.
Budapest: Shoes on the Danube BankDay 4
🏛️9:00 AMShoes on the Danube Bank
Sixty pairs of iron period shoes on the embankment, marking where Arrow Cross militiamen shot Jewish Hungarians into the river in 1944–45. Small, unmarked by ceremony, and the most affecting thing in the city.
🚶 ~43 min · 🚗 ~6 min · 1.6 mi
🥾1:30 PMMargaret Island
A car-free island in the middle of the river with a running track around its rim, a musical fountain, and a medieval convent ruin. Where the city goes to not be in the city.
🚶 ~53 min · 🚗 ~7 min · 1.9 mi
🎟️6:00 PMDanube evening cruise
An hour on the water after dark, when the Parliament and the castle are lit. Cheap, unhurried, and the only way to see how the two cities face each other.
Arrive in EgerDay 5
🚄8:30 AMTrain to Eger
Budapest Keleti to Eger in about 2 hours on direct hourly services, or slightly faster changing at Füzesabony. No reservation needed on domestic trains; buy at the machine and walk on.
🚄 ~2h · 78 mi
🏛️2:00 PMEger Castle
The fortress that held in 1552, with casemates cut into the rock beneath it and a view over every red roof in town. The siege is a national founding story every Hungarian schoolchild knows.
🚶 ~5 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🌆6:00 PMDobó Square
The Baroque main square under the castle walls, named for the defence commander, with the Minorite church on one side and cafés under the arcades on the others.
Eger: Eger MinaretDay 6
🏛️9:00 AMEger Minaret
A 40m Ottoman minaret from the 1600s, the northernmost surviving in Europe. Ninety-seven very tight spiral steps; not for anyone uneasy in small spaces.
🚶 ~4 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.1 mi
🖼️1:30 PMCastle museum and casemates
Inside the fortress: the siege told properly, plus the underground gun galleries carved into the rock. The guided casemate section is the part worth the ticket.
🚶 ~31 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.2 mi
🎟️6:00 PMCellar tasting in the Valley
A guided round of three or four family cellars, Bikavér, Egri Csillag, and whatever the grower is proud of that week. Cheap by any standard, and the cellars are cold, so bring a layer.
