How many days do you need in Greece?

Six days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Greece, across Athens and Santorini.

Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.

Greece · 6 days Athens → Santorini
Best time: Late April to June and September to mid-October, warm sea, open sites, and none of August’s crush.
Athens: Acropolis and ParthenonDay 1
🏛️9:00 AM
Acropolis and Parthenon
The Parthenon has crowned this rock since 447 BC. Entry is by timed slot with a 20,000-a-day cap. Take the first morning window and walk up before the marble starts to shimmer with heat.
🚶 ~6 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Acropolis Museum
Built over live excavations you cross on glass floors; the top-floor Parthenon gallery aligns the frieze with the temple itself, visible out the window.
🚶 ~7 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.3 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Plaka
Athens’ oldest quarter, draped on the Acropolis’ north slope, bougainvillea lanes and the tiny whitewashed Anafiotika houses near the top.
Athens: Ancient AgoraDay 2
🏛️9:00 AM
Ancient Agora
Where Socrates argued and citizens voted. The Temple of Hephaestus here is the best-preserved Doric temple in Greece, and the rebuilt Stoa of Attalos shows what the ruins looked like new.
🚶 ~22 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 0.8 mi
🥾1:30 PM
National Garden
The former royal garden beside Parliament: 38 shady acres of palms, ponds, and stray Roman columns, the coolest midday refuge downtown.
🚶 ~21 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 0.8 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Evening mezze and market food walk
A guided graze through the central market district and Psiri: loukoumades, souvlaki done properly, and why Greeks eat at 10 PM. The fastest route into the city’s food culture.
Athens: Panathenaic StadiumDay 3
🏛️9:00 AM
Panathenaic Stadium
The only stadium on earth built entirely of marble, rebuilt on ancient foundations for the first modern Olympics in 1896. You are allowed to run the track.
🚶 ~41 min · 🚗 ~5 min · 1.5 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
National Archaeological Museum
The world’s deepest collection of Greek antiquity, the gold Mask of Agamemnon and the astonishing Antikythera mechanism. Still open, but its Chipperfield-designed rebuild is slated to close it for years from 2027, see it while you can.
🚶 ~26 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 1.0 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Monastiraki and Psiri
Flea-market chaos by day; after dark Psiri’s lanes fill with mezze tables, rebetiko music, and rooftop bars aimed straight at the floodlit Parthenon.
Arrive in SantoriniDay 4
✈️8:30 AM
Flight or ferry to Santorini
Athens to Santorini in 45 minutes by air, or from Piraeus port by high-speed ferry in about 5 hours (conventional ferries take 7–8, cheaper and steadier in wind). Summer ferries sell out. Book ahead.
✈️ ~45m fly · ~5h ferry · 143 mi
🏛️2:00 PM
Fira and the caldera rim
The cliff-edge capital, 260 meters above the flooded crater, cable car or 587 zigzag steps down to the old port, and the best orientation walk on the island.
🚗 ~16 min · 4.4 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Oia
The postcard village on the northern tip, blue domes, windmills, and the castle-ruin viewpoint where the whole island gathers at sunset. Claim a spot an hour early, or watch from a quieter caldera-side lane instead.
Santorini: Akrotiri Archaeological SiteDay 5
🏛️9:00 AM
Akrotiri Archaeological Site
A Bronze Age town buried and preserved by the great eruption, three-story houses, drainage, and staircases intact under a protective roof. The Aegean’s Pompeii, 1,700 years older.
🚗 ~16 min · 4.7 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Museum of Prehistoric Thera
In Fira, holding what Akrotiri’s excavators found, 3,600-year-old wall frescoes and the gold ibex figurine. See it the same day as the site; each explains the other.
🚗 ~20 min · 5.6 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Sunset catamaran caldera cruise
An evening sail under the cliffs, the red and white beaches from sea level, a swim inside the caldera, and the famous sunset without the Oia scrum.
Santorini: Ancient TheraDay 6
🏛️9:00 AM
Ancient Thera
A Hellenistic and Roman city on the 369-meter Mesa Vouno ridge: agora, theatre, and temples with a sheer drop to the beaches on either side.
🚗 ~17 min · 4.7 mi
🥾1:30 PM
Fira to Oia rim walk
The classic 10-kilometer caldera-edge path through Firostefani and Imerovigli, about three hours of the best coastal walking in the Cyclades. The path is exposed the whole way, so carry water and sun cover.
🚶 ~25 min · 🚗 ~3 min · 0.9 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Imerovigli
The quietest rim village, at the caldera’s highest point; walk out to Skaros Rock, a headland that once carried a Venetian castle.
