How many days do you need in Croatia?
Six days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Croatia, across Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb.
Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.
Croatia · 6 days Dubrovnik → Split → Zagreb
Best time: May to June or September to early October, swimmable sea, open ferries, and Dubrovnik’s lanes still breathable.
Dubrovnik: The City WallsDay 1
🏛️9:00 AMThe City Walls
Two kilometers of intact 13th–16th-century ramparts up to 25 meters high, circling the whole Old Town between mountain and sea. Go at opening or late afternoon. There is no shade, and the light is better anyway.
🚶 ~6 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🖼️1:30 PMRector’s Palace Cultural History Museum
The Republic’s state rooms, portraits, and keys of the city gates, displayed in the palace itself, the quickest route into Ragusa’s strange, proud history.
🚶 ~3 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.1 mi
🌆6:00 PMOld Town and the Stradun
The limestone main street polished to glass by four centuries of feet: evenings, when the day-trippers leave, the lantern-lit lanes go quiet and the city becomes itself again.
Dubrovnik: Fort LovrijenacDay 2
🏛️9:00 AMFort Lovrijenac
The "Gibraltar of Dubrovnik" on its 37-meter sea rock outside the walls, built to keep Venice out, with the best view back at the city. The walls ticket covers it.
🚶 ~16 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.6 mi
🥾1:30 PMMount Srđ
The 412-meter ridge behind the city, cable car or the zigzag Serpentina path up to the full amphitheater view of the walls, Lokrum, and the Elaphiti islands. The Homeland War museum in the fort explains the 1991 siege.
🚶 ~13 min · 🚗 ~2 min · 0.5 mi
🎟️6:00 PMOld Town history walk
An evening guided hour through the lanes: earthquake, siege, and the Republic’s diplomacy. That turns beautiful stone into an actual story. Screen-location walks exist too, if that is your religion.
Arrive in SplitDay 3
🚌8:30 AMBus to Split
Dubrovnik to Split in about 4 hours by intercity coach along the coastal highway, via the Pelješac Bridge, so no border crossing since 2022. The seasonal fast catamaran does it by sea in about 4h30.
🚌 ~4h · 102 mi
🏛️2:00 PMDiocletian’s Palace and the Peristyle
Not a ruin, a living Roman palace with 3,000 residents inside. Start in the Peristyle court, descend to the vaulted substructures, and note the black granite sphinx: 3,500 years old, looted from Egypt by the emperor himself.
🚶 ~2 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 366 ft
🌆6:00 PMRiva and the Old Town
The palm-lined waterfront promenade below the palace’s south wall, the town’s open-air living room, at its best over a slow evening coffee or something stronger.
Split: Cathedral of St. Domnius and the bell towerDay 4
🏛️9:00 AMCathedral of St. Domnius and the bell tower
Diocletian’s own mausoleum, converted into a cathedral for the Christians he persecuted, history’s driest joke. Climb the Romanesque tower for the rooftops and the harbor.
🚶 ~33 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.2 mi
🖼️1:30 PMMeštrović Gallery
Croatia’s greatest sculptor built this seaside villa for his retirement; the Ustaše and history intervened. His bronzes and marbles now fill the house and gardens above the sea.
🚶 ~32 min · 🚗 ~4 min · 1.2 mi
🎟️6:00 PMPalace history walk
An evening guided circuit of the palace’s gates, cellars, and hidden chapels, 1,700 years of continuous habitation needs a narrator, and after dark the Peristyle is at its most Roman.
Arrive in ZagrebDay 5
🚌8:30 AMBus to Zagreb
Split to Zagreb in about 4h30–5h by motorway coach, or a 45-minute flight. Many travelers break the trip at Plitvice Lakes. Most Zagreb-bound buses pass the park entrances.
🚌 ~4h45 · 161 mi
🏛️2:00 PMSt. Mark’s Church and the Upper Town
The medieval Gradec hill: the famous tiled coats-of-arms roof, the Stone Gate shrine with its Madonna painting that survived the fire of 1731, and Lotrščak Tower’s cannon fired at noon since 1877.
🚶 ~5 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🌆6:00 PMTkalčićeva
The former creek-bed lane that is now one unbroken run of café and bar terraces below the Upper Town, where the whole city ends up on a warm evening.
Zagreb: Dolac MarketDay 6
🏛️9:00 AMDolac Market
The red-umbrella farmers’ market on its terrace above the main square: cheese, produce, and flowers every morning; the licitar hearts make the honest souvenir.
🚶 ~5 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🖼️1:30 PMMuseum of Broken Relationships
Zagreb’s world-famous original: donated objects from ended relationships, each with its story: funny, devastating, and unlike any museum anywhere. Small enough for an hour.
🚶 ~2 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 480 ft
🎟️6:00 PMUpper Town evening walk
A guided dusk stroll as the lamplighter makes his rounds, Zagreb still lights over 200 gas lamps by hand every night, through the courtyards and legends of Gradec and Kaptol.
