How many days do you need in Albania?

Five days. That is the length of the itinerary we built for Albania, across Tirana, Berat, and Sarandë and the Albanian Riviera.

Here is what each day holds. Every stop below carries its time, and every gap says how to get to the next stop, with the walk or drive time wherever both stops are mapped.

Albania · 5 days Tirana → Berat → Sarandë and the Albanian Riviera
Best time: June and September for warm sea without the August crowds, when the whole country goes to the coast at once.
Tirana: Et'hem Bey MosqueDay 1
🏛️9:00 AM
Et'hem Bey Mosque
A late-eighteenth-century mosque with frescoes of trees and waterfalls, unusual in Islamic art. It survived the atheist campaign that demolished most religious buildings and reopened in 1991 when ten thousand people walked in without permission.
🚗 ~8 min · 2.3 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Bunk'Art
Hoxha's enormous nuclear bunker, built into a hillside and never used, now a museum of the communist period through its own rooms and corridors. Bunk'Art 2 in the centre covers the police state specifically.
🚗 ~10 min · 2.7 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Blloku
The district that was sealed off for Communist Party elite and closed to ordinary Albanians until 1991. Now the bar and restaurant quarter, which is a joke the city enjoys.
Tirana: Pyramid of TiranaDay 2
🏛️9:00 AM
Pyramid of Tirana
Built in 1988 as a museum to Enver Hoxha, later a nightclub and a NATO base, left derelict for decades and reopened in 2023 as a youth tech centre you can walk up the outside of.
🚗 ~21 min · 5.9 mi
🥾1:30 PM
Dajti Mountain
The peak above the city, reached by a fifteen-minute cable car over the suburbs and the forest, with walking trails and the whole plain laid out below.
🚗 ~21 min · 5.9 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Communist-era walking tour
The bunkers, the Blloku boundary, the pyramid, and the buildings where it was all administered. Albania's isolation was extreme even by Eastern Bloc standards and a guide is what makes that land.
Arrive in BeratDay 3
🚌8:30 AM
Bus to Berat
Tirana to Berat in about 2h30 by frequent intercity coach or furgon from the southern terminal. No booking system to speak of; turn up and pay the driver. By car it is closer to 2h on the improved road.
🚌 ~2h30 · 55 mi
🏛️2:00 PM
Berat Castle
A thirteenth-century citadel that is also a living village, with Byzantine churches, an Ottoman mosque ruin, and residents' laundry lines between them. Enter on foot up the cobbles.
🚶 ~6 min · 🚗 ~1 min · 0.2 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Mangalem quarter
The Muslim quarter on the north bank, the one in every photograph, climbing the slope below the castle in tiers of windows.
Arrive in Sarandë and the Albanian RivieraDay 4
🚌8:30 AM
Bus to Sarandë and the Albanian Riviera
Berat to Sarandë in roughly 4h30 to 5h by coach via Tepelenë, or about 4h driving. Drivers heading north up the coast afterwards should take the Llogara Pass rather than the inland road; it is slower and worth every minute.
🚌 ~4h45 · 96 mi
🏛️2:00 PM
Butrint
A UNESCO-listed city with Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman layers stacked on one wooded peninsula: a theatre, a baptistery mosaic, and a lion gate. The lower city floods seasonally, so some walkways close in winter and early spring.
🚗 ~31 min · 9.0 mi
🌆6:00 PM
Sarandë
The main coastal town and ferry link to Corfu, built around a horseshoe bay with a long seafront promenade. Functional rather than beautiful, and a useful base.
Sarandë and the Albanian Riviera: Porto Palermo CastleDay 5
🏛️9:00 AM
Porto Palermo Castle
A triangular fortress on a causeway in a near-enclosed bay, built for Ali Pasha, with a Cold War submarine tunnel cut into the headland beside it.
🚗 ~87 min · 25 mi
🖼️1:30 PM
Butrint site museum
In the Venetian castle on the acropolis, holding the sculpture found on site and explaining the layers you have just walked through.
🚗 ~31 min · 9.0 mi
🎟️6:00 PM
Riviera boat trip
A day along the coves and sea caves that the road cannot reach, including beaches accessible only from the water. Category trip; every harbour runs them.
